British Council Foundation International School Award

In Movilla High School we are proud achievers of the British Council Foundation International School Award.

Curriculum

Key Stage 3 French

All students in Years 8, 9 and 10 study French with particular focus on the four main skills:

- listening

- speaking

- reading

- writing

All pupils will develop invaluable experience in these skills, which improves their overall confidence in communication. The topics we study are myself. family, house, town, shopping, hobbies, school, food, holidays and festivals. We aim to develop a range of skills and vocabulary to allow students to speak and write about themselves. We also encourage students to question how a language works and to reflect on their use of the English language or any other native language.

Curriculum

Key Stage 4 French

Students have the opportunity to study CCEA GCSE French at Movilla High School. GCSE French gives students the opportunity to develop their language skills and widen their awareness and understanding of French-speaking countries/communities. The GCSE specification focuses on the practical use of French and is a sound basis for progression to further study, higher education or employment.

The GCSE French specification is made up of four units:

• Unit 1: Listening (one external written examination)

• Unit 2: Speaking (one teacher-conducted speaking examination)

• Unit 3: Reading (one external written examination)

• Unit 4: Writing (one external written examination)

Benefits of studying GCSE French

GCSE French helps students to:

• develop their knowledge of and enthusiasm for language learning skills by providing opportunities for the practical use of French

• develop the confidence to communicate effectively in French

• take their place as citizens in a multilingual, global society

Additional Information

One particular highlight for us in the Modern Languages Department, is the European Day of Languages which takes place 26 September every year. We celebrate this through class activities, homework, assembly and a Year 8 French Breakfast. Throughout the year we love to try new food/drinks in our lessons, which is usually met with enthusiasm!

It is our aim to organise a foreign language trip every June which is an amazing and unforgettable experience for all involved. This June we are travelling to Paris and we are in the process of planning our trip for the following year.
